Hardford:Elisha Babcock. 1790. 1st edition. pp.(6), 364, 4.  Hardcover.  Full leather binding with red label to spine. Leather scuffed and worn, to boards at edge points. Internally end-pages age toned, with the rear 2 free end-pages removed.  The title page and dedication page have had small tears repaired to versos and have seperated from binding top and bottom inch.  The editior's preface is detached and damaged, but laid in. The page has tape to 3 edges and a small tear affecting the print on the 6-10th line up from the bottom. Otherwise all pages present, with browning and foxing throughout. There are three wormholes to bottom page edges, not affecting type.  *John Winthrop (1587/88-1649) was an English Puritan lawyer and one of the leading figures in founding the Massachusets Bay Colony, the second major settlement in New England, following Plymouth Colony. Winthrop led the first large wave of immigrants from England in 1630  and served as governor for 12 of the colony's first 20 years. His writings and vision of the colony as a Puritan "city upon a hill" dominated New England colonial development, influencing the governments and religions of neighboring colonies." (Wikipedia).  Both Sabin 104847 and Howes W-583 attribute editorship of this work to Noah Webster.
