On January 2, 1987, during a severe northeast storm occurring together with a perigean spring tide, Nauset Beach was breached at a point directly east of Chatham Light. The US Army Engineer Waterways Research Center, and Coastal Engineering Research Center was requested to provide technical assistance to the US Army Engineer Division, New England, after a reconnaissance study of coastal processes in the vicinity of the break. The purpose of the study was to determine the initial impacts of the breach on the Chatham Tidal inlet system
