New York:D. Appleton and Company. 1856. Illustrated by John Gilbert. 415pp+ 4pp ads. Hardcover. Pebbled boards with embossed design are lightly soiled and sun-faded, especially at spine and edges. Edge points are worn to boards. Spine ends are starting to fray and there is some chipping of cloth along rear spine edge. The gilt on spine is no longer legible.  Internally, a previous owner name is penned to 1st free end-page and a bookseller's ticket to inside front board. An additional pencilled inscription is on the 2nd free end-, and there is moderate foxing scattered throughout.  The binding is still tight and hinges intact.  Overall, a good solid copy.
